Nora's Moving - It's the last Checkmate!

Lately it seems like online dating has taken the dating out of dating. We’re busy, the internet is weird, we get it. But what if you could stop swiping and start actually meeting people you wanted to talk to, right now?

That’s what we’re here for!  Hang out with some people from your community, in a friendly place, on a few mini-dates, before you and your buds get on with your night.

We’re giving you 5 minutes to discover all the good stuff about a person - stuff you might never get to know online - to see if you guys vibe in REAL LIFE. Because ultimately, that’s what matters.

Maybe you’ll date, maybe you’ll hook up, maybe you’ll wave to each other at the bar on Saturday and that’s it, or maybe you’ll never speak again.

Hopefully you’ll leave with a few new friends. We usually do.

You’ll fill out a form when you get here. We’ll match you with others who seem like a good fit. You’ll go on a series of 5 minute “dates” with these folks -- you’ll sit down and have a short conversation together.

We usually run through 4-5 rounds in an evening, with one 10 minute break in the middle, at the bar. Chat with anyone who’s caught your eye, or do a quick debrief with your friends. The whole thing runs for an hour and a half. Depending on who shows up, you may not be matched every round, but you’ll always have people to talk to at the bar.

After 5 minutes, if you’re not feeling it, that’s fine. You’ll never have to talk again. Except it’s Logan Square, so you might. But you can always just smile and wave.

We’re all about new friends and no awkwardness in this community!

If you felt a lil connection, that’s great! Write their name on the sheet we give you before the last round so we can pass on your email. If not, don’t.

What to do if you match:

After the night’s over, we’ll see if you’re a match. If you’re both into each other, we’ll set you both up with each other’s contact info, in an email later on in the week. You take it from there.

What to do if you don’t:

Damn, it sucks. We know - it happens to everyone. But a true connection happens between BOTH people, and this is all just part of the process. It’s no one’s fault.  Go out with your friends and laugh about it later. Come back next time to chat with some new folks.

This is an inclusive event for people of every gender and orientation. We ask you to specify these aspects of your identity in the form to bring you your best match!

A lot of love and labor goes into this event, so we thought we'd do it for a good cause! Center on Halsted is the Midwest's most comprehensive community center dedicated to advancing community and securing the health and well-being of the LGBTQ people of Chicagoland. More than 1,000 community members visit the Center every day. Learn more here:

We're two friends who have tried online dating and found it lacking. Erin's concerned how it's affecting offline interactions. Nora's worried it creates a false sense of scarcity. We wanted to try something in person, so we looked up speed dating in Chicago, but couldn't find any events in a community we want to be a part of. That's when we decided to make our own.
